Court Mounting
Court mounting of medals is when the medals are fixed to a backing made of buckram. The buckram is, itself, covered in the relevant medal ribbons and gives the medals a very attractive look whilst keeping them firmly fixed down which prevents damage from the medals banging against each other.
Court mounting came about during the reign of Queen Victoria because she did not like the noise made by her courtier’s medal ‘chinking’ together. It is now the most common form of medal mounting found in the UK Armed Forces
Ordinary/ Original or swing mounting
This style of mounting medals is where the medal is suspended from the ribbon and held by a brooch. This style will let the medals swing into each other and make the ‘ching’ noise that can be heard on most remembrance parades.
